Hunting For A DJ-Tip 1

I followed up with a prospective client the other day who stated the venue they booked for their event had an in house DJ. She was a little concerned about whether or not their DJ had a variety of music, even though the venue said he had a good collection.

I mentioned to her she might ask to see a copy of his condensed music list so she can see a sample of the DJ's collection and to make advance requests and dedications.

In house DJs are usually family members of the venue's owner. Their prices are lower which makes it more attractive to the shopper. But what you don't know is they are usually hobbyist. The only way they can get bookings are through their low rates and their family who owns the venue. Their music collections are usually mostly what they like with some music from other genres. Their equipment is also questionable. (I attended a friend's 50th wedding anniversary who's venue had an in-house DJ. That DJ had loose wiring coming out of the back of his console and he was performing for the formal affair in a t-shirt and cut off jeans.)

A tip I have for you is when shopping for a DJ and you want to make sure you get a professional DJ, not a hobbyist, ask these few questions.

1. Do you have references? (Today it's easy for a house DJ to have references because they're usually relatives.)

2. What is your website? (Professional DJs will have individual website, not just a Facebook account or piggy backing the venue's site.)

3. Do you have a sample music list online? (Professional DJs will have a website that include a sample music list, as well as planners and time lines to make planning your event easier.)

4. Does the DJ meet with you for free consultations and follow-ups? (How else can a DJ get to know you better than just a signature on a contract. The DJ should meet with you to get to know your personality, your likes and dislikes.)

I hope this helps you with planning for your special event. Remember, a DJ can make or break the party. There are no do-overs for bad DJ blunders.
